Told in the form of a travel notebook, the story follows the steps of a Western traveller who is brought face to face with the Malagasy customs and rituals, especially the Famadihana or “turning of the bones”.
Bastien Dubois

Born in 1983, Bastien Dubois graduated in 2006 with a diploma in computer filmmaking from Supinfocom College in Valenciennes. In his final year, he directed a 7-minute 3D short film called “AH”.
After his studies, he gained a number of years’ experience in the creation of web sites and in the animation of video games.
An avid traveller, it was during a trip that the idea of creating an animated travel notebook came to him.
In this project, I wanted to combine my two passions: drawing and journeys.
This film is largely autobiographical, since it is based on my experience of a 10-month trip I made to Madagascar and, in particular, on the discovery of a unique and mysterious ritual: the Famadihana. This Malagasy custom takes place when a family member is buried. During the burial, the remains of the ancestors who are in the family crypt are exhumed in order for them to make a brief visit to the world of the living for a day. It is an occasion for the family to strengthen their bonds around the memory of their dead.
The most important idea behind this film is to discover a country through the eyes of a painter: the fact that the subject matter is drawn rather than filmed or photographed enhances its fundamental worth.
