CARTOON FEATURE is a European training seminar focusing on all aspects of animated feature films, from concept to distribution.
The next edition will take place from 23-25 April 2012 in Munich (Germany).
The 2012 edition will focus on how to improve co-productions and pan-European distribution.
The detailed programme is not available yet but you will find the latest edition's details in the following pages.
THE HIGH STANDARD OF EUROPEAN ANIMATION
The industry of European animated films is still growing with an increased number of films produced and distributed worldwide.
The combination of excellent training schools, funding schemes and tax incentives, a tradition of co-productions and talent that finds its expression in a new way of telling stories, all that has contributed to set apart European animation from American major studios. It now enables European animated features to culminate in admission levels in cinema theaters never reached before.
Latest reports – from Unifrance Film in particular – confirm that the performance of animated features in cinema theaters is different from other genres as far as audience figures, number of prints, exhibition time, promotion and life span are concerned. In all cases animated features enjoy figures that are above any other cinema form.
These are rejoicing news for the industry at large.
Europe’s ambition in creative terms can also be praised. There have never been so many films d’auteurs, novel and comic book adaptations in collaboration with their authors, science fiction fantasies that target an enlarged audience, interested in innovative story-telling more teenage/adult-oriented.
To accompany cinema release, Internet with social networks and viral marketing still represent a powerful promotional tool that producers should not overlook. Thus film-related content such as video or mobile games are on the increase thanks to new partnerships with the entertainment industry at large. Rovio’s Angry Birds cross promotion with Rio, the 20th Century Fox animated feature is enlightning in this respect.
At latest Cartoon Movie (March 2011), it was noted that production budgets have decreased. This is why it is important for producers to diversify their sources of funding through co-productions, equity financing and other specialised bank loans.
This year’s edition of Cartoon Feature will thus concentrate on how to deliver the best story for your film through improved script-writing and development, on other forms of fund-raising and financing through crowdfunding on the Internet and guarantee loans through the new MEDIA production guarantee fund. Emphasis will also be put on how to increase the notoriety of films through better distribution and partnerships with mobile and video game companies.
As is customary we will also look in depth at case studies on what Europeans do so well at the moment: films d’auteurs and lower budget films for enlarged audiences.
